Moving On

Report 8
20 June 1998
Camp 2, N 69º10.742', W 26º38.086'.

We have had a couple of days of cloud cover which has dropped the temperature noticeably. This has also made our solar panel useless, so no photos this time I’m afraid. We were at camp 2 for 6 days, climbed most of the surrounding mountains and were running out of food. We decided to have one last climb then move on, head back down the glacier for a re-supply at cache 2, then onwards to snowscapes new. The walls around the cooking area have been thinning every day, you can see through them in some places. We got used to that high pass beneath the pyramid with its views out over the ranges to the partly frozen Arctic ocean. It was sad to leave; I don’t suppose we will ever go back.

Camp Scenes

Perspectives change. We aren’t here for three weeks but for 7 x 3 day food bags. Tonight we break into the fourth. They are all anonymous and were packed months ago so it is an exciting time. The basics are always the same, it is the variants that hosts excitement. What flavour of noodles or beans and rice? What little treats got added to this bag or that?

We have had some snow and it is a bit windy now. We are trying to climb a peak this evening then move again tomorrow towards the ice cap. We will send some pictures as soon as the weather improves.
